Viola Davis and Sam Heughan enter the crisis business in Ascent.
A corporate fixer’s family emergency anchors the Paramount+ thriller. Filming is planned for 2027.

Sam Heughan is joining Viola Davis in Ascent, a Paramount+ thriller about the people hired to make corporate disasters disappear. The series pairs an elite fixer facing a family emergency with a top operative whose charm is part of his professional toolkit.
Filming is expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027. The casting report does not announce a premiere date.
A fixer loses her safe distance
Davis plays Catriona, a powerful corporate crisis manager. Her work puts her close to money, influence and the machinery used to contain reputational damage. The premise turns personal when her estranged daughter is in danger and the methods Catriona normally deploys for clients become part of her own emergency.
That is the central tension: someone paid to control other people’s crises can no longer treat the next case as somebody else’s problem. The announcement establishes that setup without revealing how the daughter’s predicament unfolds or how Catriona resolves it.
Heughan plays Conal, a leading agent at Ascent Ventures. The casting description presents him as charming, ruthless and able to change his persona to suit an assignment—a professional skill set that puts influence and manipulation at the centre of his role.
The writer behind the corporate pressure cooker
John Logan created the series and serves as its writer, showrunner and executive producer. His credits include Skyfall, Gladiator and Penny Dreadful: a background spanning large-scale film storytelling and serialized television.
Paramount Television Studios is producing. Michael Aguilar is an executive producer, with Davis and Julius Tennon executive producing through JuVee Productions.
A new chapter after Outlander
Heughan comes to the project as his long association with Outlander reaches its eighth and final season. His other forthcoming work includes Embassy for MGM+, alongside J.K. Simmons and Anna Kendrick.
Ascent gives him a different advertised role: an adaptable corporate operator rather than an extension of Jamie Fraser. For Davis, the premise puts both professional authority and vulnerability at the center of Catriona’s character, instead of using her simply as the powerful executive who issues instructions from a distance.
For now, the announcement establishes the lead pairing, Logan’s creative role and the planned production window. A trailer, episode count and release schedule remain to be announced.
